Tips on Decorating Window Sills For the Holidays

It’s that time of the year again when the leaves start to fall and the nights get longer and colder. Pretty soon winter will be here, and that means that the festive season is nearly upon us. October may be a bit soon to start decorating, but nothing is stopping you from starting to plan your decorations. After all, before you know it every shop will start playing Christmas music and adorn their shelves with holiday paraphernalia, and you since this season comes by but once a year, you need to make the most of it. If people take exception to your early decorating, imagine their criticism if you leave your decorations up too late in January. To help you spark your creativity and give you a head start, here are some tips on decorating your window sills for the holidays.

That Personal Touch

Your window sill gives you a limited amount of space for placing objects. It’s a linear space, so you obviously need to place objects in a row. Literally anything can become a decoration here — if it reminds you of the holidays, you can use it. You are only limited by your imagination. But don’t only think of the space as one horizontal row. You also have all the space above it, so you should definitely also consider using string to hang objects vertically. Treat the whole window area as a canvas, and create a balanced display in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions.

Let There Be Lights

For many people the holidays are a time of religious celebration. You can easily create a display of religious symbols in your window sills, for instance a nativity scene to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus. Or you could use it to celebrate Hanukkah by placing a menorah filled with candles on the window sill, and hanging a Magen David on either side.

Candles are always a good idea. Round ones, square ones, fat ones, tall ones, big candle holders, or none at all — if you like candles, they alone can make a beautiful decoration that you can even leave up for the whole year.

If you are scared of lighting your curtains on fire, you can use strings of battery powered LED lights to decorate your windows instead. They will be ideal to enhance or frame other displays on your window sill.

There are many more secular decorations you can use. Snow and fir trees, reindeer and Father Christmas, sleighs and sleigh bells — these are all common decorations with holiday spirit. You have to use them, but you can dare to be a bit original. Instead of making little fake Christmas trees, take a few small flower pots filled with sand, and put pine cones in them. You can also make flat paper trees by cutting out Christmas tree shapes and decorating them with glitter. You can do the same with stars and any other shapes you like.

Finally, and quite simply, your Christmas tree decorations can make beautiful additions to your window sill display. Just line up your baubles, elves, candy canes and garlands, or hang them up with string.
