Home Designs: Signs Your Home Might Need a Design Update

“We do not believe in moving to a new place and replicating the one you left behind. Where is the fun in that?” –Andrew Fisher

Dilapidated, Dated and Declining—are these three words that perfectly sum up your home? Well, if they do then it makes perfect sense for you to start giving it major makeover—or even a total overhaul. However, while those three words describe homes that are worse for wear, a home that is functional and clean does not mean it would require no design attempt either. Although homes that are still in functioning order would not require drastic improvements or renovations, it may still need a modern facelift. After all, if you have lived in a home for quite some time, chances are there are design aspects that are way past their prime and are already considered obsolete. In this regard, it would do you well if you gave it a contemporary update to make the interiors of your homes look more stylish.

Similarly, you might also be committing some home decor faux pas and have continued to use them over the years inadvertently thinking they are sophisticated and elegant. If you have lived in your Makati condo for rent or elsewhere for a significant number of years, take a gander around your homes and see if any of the signs below are present:

1.) Red, Green and Gold Color Palette

Unless you are royalty or wanted to channel a Tuscan design, then there is no acceptable reason for you to be utilizing this color palette. Indeed, decades ago when the Tuscan design style took the world by storm, many homeowners joined the bandwagon and were looking to integrate this into their homes. However, this trend has lost its edge over the years and is definitely losing its traction over interior designers. By now, it is time to toss this trend out and look for new colors to incorporate in decorating scheme.

2.) While Appliances

White appliances are known for their design versatility and its ability to complement almost any room color. Unfortunately, much like the color, it tends to get rather dull. Today, contemporary design is all about stainless steel and if you wish to give your homes that futuristic or modern update, this should be the preferred finish of your kitchen appliances. No need to worry if the finish goes with your kitchen design as it coordinates well with a wide range of cupboard styles whether contemporary or traditional.

3.) Outdated Hardware

Brass may have made a comeback, but not all brass fixtures look stylish. In lieu of those high-shine and bright fixtures found in most homes, opt for the ones that are brushed to give it an antiqued look. They may look rather old-fashioned, but they are definitely sophisticated and very much stylish.

4.) Carpet everything

While this trend might have been something of a craze for a while, it is not exactly practical to do. Although rugs in excellent design and aesthetics add visual appeal and would amplify the aura of comfort to a room, they can be rather hard to maintain and clean. This is especially true when you have little tots running around the house spilling milk or juice everywhere and anywhere. Instead of decking out your floors fully in carpet or rugs, choose durable and long-lasting alternatives. After all, not only is the latter easier to clean but it makes your home more updated and stylish as well.

5.) Faux Floral Arrangements

Sure, they last you a lifetime and all you would really need to do to maintain them is clean them and perch them wherever you wish. Unfortunately, they look far too artificial to have any real place in a home, and as a result, they give your homes that overall tacky feel. Instead of using fake flower arrangements, opt for real ones. Just remember to change them every few days or weeks.
